We are very grateful to our Governing Body who volunteer their time to serve our school.
Foundation Governors are appointed in the name of the Archbishop and form the majority of the Governing Body of a Catholic school. They have a legal duty to preserve and develop the Catholic character of the school and to ensure that the school is conducted in accordance with its trust deed.
The Governing Body has three core functions:
- ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
- holding leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the performance management of staff; and
- overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent.
The duties of a Governing Body are set out in the Education Act 2002, along with a range of regulations. The duties of a Governor are varied and rewarding, and can be summarised as promoting the high standards of education for all children, as well as having a responsibility for the conduct and achievement of the school.
Governors at St Mary’s are highly committed to promoting and furthering standards within the school and work closely with the Headteacher, teachers and support staff to develop the school as a whole. As a part of their duties Governors regularly visit the school to celebrate and enjoy performances, teaching and learning and school events such as Mass. This then enables our Governors to fulfil their statutory duties for the conduct of the school. Governors regularly attend training and courses to enable them to carry out their duties more effectively.
